Sergey Budylin, an advisor at the Bartolius Law Office, participated in the English Law Days conference that took place in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan, on the 9th and 11th of November, 2022.

Sergey took part in the section on asset tracing and interim measures related to asset tracing. He described the possibilities for Russian courts to participate in international litigation (although currently such possibilities are rather theoretical).

A prominent English case, AA v Persons Unknown (2019), was discussed, relating to tracing and recovery of cryptocurrency, extorted by criminals from a victim as a ransom. In this case, an English court ordered the block of bitcoins on the account of a crypto-exchange registered on the British Virgin Islands.

In other sections, various other issues were discussed: the activity of the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC), international sanctions and anti-money-laundering legislation; practical aspects of international commercial arbitration; the wording of arbitration clauses; using experts in international disputes; etc.
